a day with no sin

This post is from one of my favorite blogs: Mom's In Need of Mercy.
It really made me stop. And think. And realize that this applies to me. A lot. I think this applies to me more than the kids. Imagine a day without sin. Just one. Ok, I'll take an hour. But then again, I probably couldn't handle a taste of Heaven...I guess that's why we don't get one here on earth. My heart's desire is perfection with Christ!
These roses aren’t cowering under the rain; they’re standing strong despite it. Yet, unlike the roses, as I’ve felt rained on this week, I’m wilting. After talking with a friend today, I finally realized what the problem is: I’ve been expecting days with no sin—or little sin. Yet the day begins and sin happens. Kids whine. They bite, they hit, they misbehave, they argue, they act disrespectfully, selfishly, impatiently—and that’s just the children. The amount of foolishness and sin that displays itself in a day leaves me reeling. But, like the roses, I should ready myself for the arrival of rain. Sin will indeed reveal itself as the day unwinds. We are all, after all, sinners. Saved by grace through Christ’s atoning sacrifice for those who put their faith in Him, but sinners this side of heaven nonetheless. Only Christ can cleanse any of us from our sin. My job as a parent is not to prevent sin at all costs but to disciple and train my children to learn why their specific sins—once done--are wrong, how to avoid them in the future, and how to live an increasingly holy life for the glory of God.

It is foolish of me to expect the clean slate we are given at the start of each day will stay blank all day long. Realizing that I will see sinful behavior from my children each and every single day frees me from my impossible expectation of a sinless day. That’s not to excuse it; we should certainly devote much effort to snuffing out wrong attitudes and behavior. Yet the difference in philosophy is night-and day: if we expect perfect holiness, we will be dealt huge blows when we see how far we all fall short; if, on the other hand, we are fully aware we will fall short, our reaction to sin as it displays itself will be much more realistic. It won’t be such a shocker if we’re expecting its arrival. Like showers of rain, downpours of sin are not particularly desirable. I much prefer sunny, cheerful days. But just as the rain is necessary, sin shows us our need for a Savior. Like a gardener weeding the early summer garden, we diligently work with our children as sin pours out of their lives. The rainy days will produce beautiful roses that stand firm when the storms blow. And after the storm, they will smell of the sweet fragrance of Christ.

So the bottom line is—yes, we work hard to fight sin, but no, we shouldn’t be surprised by it. That revelation, for me, allows me to adjust my attitude when I see sin in my children’s lives. Instead of being shocked and angry, I can deal with it much more calmly, collectively, and in my right mind. May we embrace this glorious day, with all its sin, ever thankful that we have a Savior who will someday give us an eternity of perfect, sinless days.

thought for week of april 25, 2010

Finish each day & be done with it.  You have done what you could.  Some blunders & absurdities no doubt crept in; forget them as soon as  you can.  Tomorrow is a new day; begin it well & serenely and with too high a spirit to be encumbered with your old nonsense.  ~Ralph Waldo Emerson

chicago & oprah

FINALLY posting about our trip to chicago!~
we stayed at the hotel palomar. a very modern, chic, 'uber' type hotel. very different than what we 40-somethings are used to but it was fun. it was only 3 wks. old so everything was very clean and new. we found oursleves assessing the functionality (or lack 0f)...guess we're not so young and hip. that's ok. we're completely ok with that. we just stayed busy all day.
kinda fun...our robes
flowers in the lobby
freaky girls in the lobby for the grand opening/ribbon cutting ceremony. had NO idea they were real...we were standing in the foyer and i didn't even notice them until one moved and scared the bageebies (as aunt jan would say) out of me!
my new favorite restaurant in chicago: preseco...amazing! (and mom...i ate brussel sprouts-NOT that i liked them or anything~just for the record!)
um~he was on the wall at the mexican restaurant. i thought of ben when i saw it. no idea why. hmmm...really wondering about that. probably would have thought this was interesting. or something like that. yep.

isnt this beautiful?! a shoe store with my name on it! i think i'll put it as my screen saver...on my computer...and my phone...and my e-calendar...
this great place was in lincoln park (just south of where we lived about 17 yrs. ago) karen wants to move here. but we're not letting her. why, then, is she taking real estate flyers out of their boxes? i already told her that they're not taking any new residents, regardless of what those silly pieces of paper say. she's not listening. she's single. a nurse (i'm sure she probably makes millions at this point!). and loving chicago. she wants to move. badly. we're not letting her. PERIOD!
joanne said it was getting a little boring just sitting by the lake so she stepped in front of a cycler (you know, one of those REAL ones w/spikes on his shoes...she doesn't mess around!). if you ask me, she just wanted some attention! ;) we were just happy there was no ER involved, although i think the other guy probably visited his plastic surgeon afterwards-he had a pretty nasty gash in his face from his sunglasses! good thing joanne's beautiful face wasn't messed with-but at least she had a pretty good battle scar to show for it...c'mon, the bigger the injury, the more the sympathy, right husbands?!!
the zoo. couldn't find any of my kids here. where are they?!
(just kidding, you little monkeys!)
a store called that's my bag. lots of purses. vera's. brighton. a purse door handle. very cool!
water tower place. jumping water. just a pic. trust me~one of those things that's way better in real life. bear with me, folks.

some things never change

we've been going to the same service center for YEARS. i had this laying on the counter when jake and liv came down with a bill that they found from 1995. i think he's probably still working on the same box that he bought on bulk at the discount. it's refreshing to call and talk to the owner (although we do have to talk a LOT louder than previously) on his one-line phone and to not see a computer. i'm sure he hasn't cleaned his desk since then either. however, he has quit smoking, which is probably why he's still working. hey gina! the bill on the left is from your honda :) aaahhh...memories (or nightmares if you're remembering learning how to drive a stick!!)

cars

cars. now tell me-do you really care what you drive?
i have a few stipulations:
**i'd really rather it not have rust holes in the back seat like my bug did (it would be such a bummer if i lost one of my kids on the way to the store!)
**please, no transmission problems like in my olds that i had to start it 5th period so i could drive it home
**a radio is nice~i have recurring memories (nightmares!) of me singing in my TC3-i had no radio because it got ripped off (at calvin college no less!!)
**i'd like it to go over 60 unlike my hyundai
**i can do without the stick from my vega too
but other than that, i'm not really hard to please. my suburban is a 2004 and as far as i'm concerned it's just getting broken in...90,000 miles? no problem-it's merely a babe.
HOWEVER
lately my kids and my hubby think i really should be considering a new car. c'mon! wanna know what the kids would like me to drive? audi R8 spyder convertible. mustang shelby Gt500(yes, with the hideous stripes down the front middle). BMW Z4 Sdrive35IS-this baby has 335 horsepower~not to mention it STARTS at $61,000. yes, my friends sixty one THOUSAND dollars. i must say it's a pretty 'sweet' car but it's SO NOT happening!! a little ostentatious wouldn't ya say? (os·ten·ta·tious-adjective. Definition: rich and showy: marked by a vulgar display of wealth and success designed to impress people.) vulgar display-my thoughts exactly.
so tell me...what do you think?
am i crazy? (remember this IS my blog so you can't actually call me crazy here), or just lovin' my big truck?

we love our cousin(s) because...

when ed and i were in chicago, leanne and rob had the 3 youngest and made some great memories with them. she gave us a power point that was similar to this (but for some reason i couldn't get it to work on here so i had to improvise...). what a cool gift!! thanks, sis.

my out of control messy life

my girlfriend and i were talking the other day about the old adage that if you want to know about the state of my life, look in my purse. apparently my life is a little crazy...see for yourself!
i have to tell you that this is not indicative of the rest of my house~each of these places is my own personal (chaotic) space.
my desk
my purse
my dresser (and nightstand) but look...my bed's made :)
the floor to my shoe closet
and here's your mission: find 2 that match! didn't think so!!
my top shelves in my closet
notice the hat NEXT to the hat form...
and here's the chair i'm heading to to take a nap!
ZZZZZZZ.....

so sweet!

look at what i saw when i walked outside today.
this was so adorable! mady really wanted us to all (our family and kayt & jake's friends) have a picnic on her sleeping bag outside. no one else wanted to so daddy went to 'hang out' w/her. they are seriously buds anyway so i'm so happy to have these pics.

nrcs easter program, april 9, 2010

friday was the easter program at school. it was so nice-kids reciting, choirs singing, bands playing...and my personal favorite...when all the kids K-8 sing Christ is Risen. it's so beautiful. it gives me chills. it reminds me of what heaven will be like-masses of people gathered singing praises to God!

well, i meant to take pictures, i really did. i had my camera and everything. under my chair. i was a little busy making sure emma didn't fall off the chair next to me, plus making sure she and preston had plenty of candy. (do you think that had anything to do with the text fleur sent me that emma won't take her nap because she was so hyper? oops, sorry).
Christ the Lord is Risen Today. Alleluia!

FDU

it's official. we've given our deposit {to the #1 nursing program in NJ!!} and our 'baby' will be going to fairleigh dickenson university in the fall. i'm so proud of her for getting in...it's not easy and she's worked for it. i got to see a little of college life...cool! kit got to sit in on a class today and she said it was awesome~she wanted to just sit there and learn it all-doesn't surprise me at all!! not just because i'm her mom, but...she's going to make an AMAZING nurse! seriously, it takes an incredible person to be a nurse...you couldn't PAY ME to do the stuff that they have to do~actually, you'd probably WANT to pay me to leave you alone. but the business aspect of medicine? hook me up!
thanks, kayt, for inviting me to go along with you-it was truely a privilege! i love you, girlfriend!
