The following is an excerpt from the back of our bulletin that our Pastor wrote. I've thought about this so often since it was written so I thought I'd share it with you and hope that it makes an impression on you like it made on me.
"It has been said that great men have short biographies (think of M'Cheyne, Brainerd, etc.). This is also true for Enoch. He was arguably one of the greatest men of the book of Genesis, yet his life was the shortest of all (Genesis 5). Why was he given this honor? Why was he blessed and taken so soon? It is because his life was more inward, the part that lived most intensely in Enoch was the very part men did not see. The hidden life: the spirit, the heart, the soul. His life was hid with God. It was too inward a life to make any great impressions on the world. But Enoch walked with God, and his memorial is alive today.
Walking with God is the only thing worthy of remembering. Your time of exit is fast approaching. What will you be remembered for? Will it be your job? Your education? Your family? Your outward success? Surely there were many such men and women in Enoch's day who had everything you do, but they are gone, and their memory is covered over by the dust of history and sand of time. But if you walk with God, if your life is, "hid with Christ in God", if nothing else matters in this perishing, fleeting world than Christ, then something lasting has begun. Something eternal has entered the soul. Will your children and grandchildren say of you, "For he walked with God, and God took him"?
